Language walks - why I’ve started this initiative
I started a new initiative called Language walks for a few reasons. I am interested to see how students’ experiences of language acquisition is different when they are out walking. Not everyone likes to sit at a desk and learn and I have seen with some students that their confidence is increased with an ability to keep moving as they talk. The idea is to introduce site specific vocabulary in a relaxed atmosphere. Being outdoors with a small group is also a lovely social activity so it brings together a few different goals of mine - to facilitate language learning in as many ways as possible, to be active outdoors and to bring people together with a shared goal.
Language walks mean that you learn language specific to the weather and the environment that you are in. I limit the walks to small numbers as I prefer to be able to give individual attention as much as I can. Walks so far have been in Kilruddery and in Greystones with vocabulary relating to those areas and activities that were taking place on the day.
Have you somewhere in mind where you might like to do a French walk? I’d love to hear from you.
