The Savoy Magazine

Volume 1 of the Savoy Magazine

Ilustration Aubrey Beardsley 1896

The Savoy Magazine was a literary and arts publication first published in 1896. Eight issues were issued between January and the end of the year. At the helm were publisher Leonard Smithers, editor Arthur Symons (more of him next time) and the art editor Aubrey Beardsley. The Savoy published work by diverse authors such as Paul Verlaine, W.B. Yeats, Sarojini Naidu, Havelock Elis and Joseph Conrad to name but a few. The importance of this publication lay in the fact that, despite it’s short -lived existence, it showcased late decadent and symbolist work and it provided a safe haven for new work to be explored. Yellow Nineties 2.0 is the source for the background on the publication and contains really beautiful slides of Beardsley’s illustrations https://1890s.ca/about/
